Consumers urged to check cover for sports equipment

Consumers have been warned by a leading insurance provider that they should ensure expensive sports equipment is covered under their home contents policy.

LV= has stated that people need to inform their provider if they own expensive bicycles or golf clubs, as some policies may not cover items stored outside of a property in sheds or garages.

Research by the organisation claims that 11.4 million homes have some form of gym facilities, while 1.9 million people in the UK also have their own snow sports equipment.

Emma Holyer, LV='s home insurance spokesperson, urged people to consider taking out personal possessions insurance.

She added: "This not only covers items like mobile phones, money, laptops and bags, but also sports equipment when it is away from the home."

In other recent insurance news, Sainsbury's latest research claimed this week that premiums for drivers have risen by five per cent in the past year.

The company's study found that the average premium in December 2007 cost £497.26.ADNFCR-1054-ID-18485522-ADNFCR
